The Great Hall of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, that is the first Greek Institution of Higher Education, is located in the “Main Building” of the University, Propylaea (Panepistimiou St. 30), one of the oldest neo-classical buildings of the city of Athens.  The “Main Builiding” together with the Academy of Athens and the National Library compose the so called “Neo-classical Trilogy”. It was built under the supervision of the German engineer Edward Schaubert, following the plan created by the Danish architect Christian Hansen. The paintings of the building were designed by the Austrian artist Karl Rahl and executed by painter Eduard Lebiedski.  In 1846, generous contributions by Greeks abroad together with a state subsidy allowed the construction of the Great Hall to begin.  The works were completed in 1851 and its frescos were painted by Karl Rahl’s students.

Nowadays, the Great Hall of the University hosts the official university ceremonies, scientific and cultural events as well as conferences organized by the Institution throughout the academic year.  Furthermore, following specific university regulations, the Great Hall is also available for events organized by non-university organizations.

The “Ioannis Drakopoulos” Amphitheatre, the old “Medicine School Amphitheatre”, is located in the Main Building of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Propylaea (Panepistimiou St. 30).  Before its renovation,   the Amphitheatre was operated as an Auditorium. The Amphitheatre was renamed honoring the memory of Professor of the Faculty of Geology and Geo-environment and acting Vice Rector Ioannis Drakopoulos, who passed away in 1999.

The Amphitheatre is available for conferences, lectures, seminars etc.

The “Alkis Argyriadis” Amphitheatre is located in the Main Building of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Propylaea (Panepistimiou St. 30).  The Amphitheatre was named honoring the memory of Law School Professor, Alkis Argyriadis, Vice-Rector of the University (1983 to 1986 , who was also elected  Rector, but passed away, before his official duties assumption.

The Amphitheatre is available for conferences, lectures, seminars etc.

The Hall is located in the neo-classical building (Academias St. 48) that was erected in 1857 and named after the Greek famous poet Kostis Palamas, who acted as General Secretary of the University (1897-1928).  It got renovated in 1981 and in 1985, the building’s current function was inaugurated in order to house the University Community Hall.  It is also used as a cultural centre to host events such as conjectural exhibitions, lectures addressed to small audiences, round tables, conferences and symposia.

The Athens University History Museum is located in the building known as “Kleanthis’ Residence” or “The Old University”, (Tholou St. 5, Plaka).  From 1837 and for four years, the first University of the Independent Greek State, as well as the wider area of the Balkans and eastern Mediterranean was housed in the above mentioned building. One hundred and fifty years later, in 1987, its current function was inaugurated.

In the Hall, cultural events, conjectural exhibitions, lectures, round tables,  conferences and symposia are hosted. The external venues of the Museum are available for theatrical and musical performances.

The Hall is located in a building of the Interwar period (Skoufa St. 45), where the History Archive  of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens,  founded in 1991, is housed.

It houses a research center and its Hall of the University History  is available for scientific events.
