Athens has an extensive public transport network, including:
- Metro (3 lines)

- Suburban Railway (Proastiakos)
Public transport services generally operate from approximately 05:00 to midnight. Metro Lines 2 and 3 run extended hours until 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
🔸 Tickets & Student Discounts
- Standard ticket: €1.20 (valid for 90 minutes across all modes of transport)
- Erasmus students are entitled to a 50% discount upon issuance of the Academic ID (pass).
- Until the Academic ID is issued, students may use their home university student card, provided they are under 25 years of age.
🔸 ATH.ENA Card (Personalized Travel Card)
To access discounted fares, students must issue a personalized ATH.ENA Card, which is used across all public transport modes in Athens.
Required Documents
- Passport or national ID
- Passport-size digital photo
- Greek mobile phone number
- Academic ID (or proof of student status, if not yet issued)
Application Methods
- Online: www.athenacard.gr (Greek language website)
- In person: at selected metro stations (e.g., Syntagma, Panepistimio, Monastiraki)
Once issued, the card can be loaded with discounted monthly or weekly passes.
✈️ Getting To & From Athens International Airport (AIA – Eleftherios Venizelos)
Athens International Airport is well connected to the city centre by multiple transport options:
Metro (Line 3 – Blue Line)
- Route: Airport ↔ Dimotiko Theatro
- Duration: approximately 40 minutes
- Fare: €9 standard / €4.50 student discount (with valid Academic ID)
- Frequency: every 30 minutes
- Operating hours: approximately 06:30 – 23:30
Line 3 connects at Doukissis Plakentias station with the Suburban Railway (Proastiakos).
Express Bus (24/7 Service)
- Flat fare: €5.50 (no student discount available)
- Tickets available at airport kiosks or onboard/terminals
- Operates 24 hours daily
